The Internship Story

My internship experience.

I applied directly to Nature Education Center, another branch of Malaysian Nature Society(MNS) that is located inside FRIM. The reason why I chose MNS as the target for industrial training is because of how established it has become and gaining its own reputation since 1940. It is one of the leading NGOs in Malaysia that focuses fully on environmental education and conservation efforts. Over the years MNS has contributed to many habitat conservation that involves other expertises as well as to spread awareness towards the public. NEC functions as one of the branches of MNS in environmental education and I realized that I was more keen towards education, especially when it comes to educating the youngsters. Though being in the conservation division would be a new and exciting experience too.

In between the 8 weeks of working, I was assigned to many tasks such as poster designing, improvising modules, conducting nature walk and stream sampling, assisting my supervisors with their tasks, finding new+creative ideas to be implemented in the current syllabus, shared some of the botany knowledge I have for their usage in the future and lastly I was assigned to conduct a nature day trip program for public on the basic knowledge of dendrology (leaves and trees) and herbarium specimen. I mostly enjoyed the day trip program because I was able to share what I know to the young ones and hoping that it can instill the love for nature while they are still young. Moreover, I realized how important environmental education is towards the public and to raise awareness we must always be innovative, creative and dynamic in our approach. Attracting the public is not an easy thing to do therefore generating new ideas and formulating strategies within the team may improve the effort.

2 months was definitely not enough. I would like to thank my supervisors Miss Zalikha and Miss Mastura for the endless assistance in everything while I was an internee. Aside for gaining new experience in the career field, I was also able to improve the lacking soft skills too. It will definitely be useful in the future. They also conducted a training session of nature walk which is a trail that provides jungle trekking experience in the urban forest of FRIM and also demonstrating the procedures of stream sampling and water quality monitoring kit. During the final week of internship, I had the opportunity to become a facilitator for Kem Wira Alam. This program is a collaboration between MNS (NEC+ Kuala Selangor Nature Park), Department of Environment and KPM. It was held for 4 days straight at Kuala Selangor Nature Park and I enjoyed it so much! I had fun interacting with the school students because they were so well behaved and most of them appreciated our efforts in conveying the environmental message. Because we conducted games but all had many hidden messages and justification. DoE invented an activity book (stage 1 and 2) for the students and it has many simple activities/tasks on environment/nature and has to be completed. Upon completion, they will receive many prizes and also certificate of participation too, as this can encourage them to finish the book. I wish we had it during my schooling days!  DoE was very kind to sponsor everything, including the non-stop food as well as the accommodation. I truly had a great time at Wira Alam Camp and hoping to participate in the future!

In conclusion, my internship period was definitely fruitful. I was able to apply what I know and to explore more new things in the future. NEC has provided me a new perspective in environmental education and also giving me insights on what to expect for career prospects in the future. A huge thanks again to my supervisors and I hope we are fated to meet again in the future, InshaAllah.
